Carlson Lied to Committee Members

Recently, Dan Carlson had announced the support of Michigan's National Committe members: Chuck Yob, and Holly Hughes. But, we placed a call in to them and came to learn that they did in fact endorse him, but they were lied to in order to get their support.

Carlson had told Hughes that the election was uncontested, and that it was an open and shut deal, thereafter she reluctantly gave her support.

Earlier this week, Chuck Yob was was also contacted and said that he was given the same line by Carlson.

Our chair is nothing more than a liar.

Oakland CR's Lukewarm About Carlson

The following is a piece of an email sent out by Oakland University College Republican chairman, Brian Koss:

"Sorry I didn't get back with you sooner. What's the good word at
xxxxx? Just like you to know I endorsed Carlson for MFCR chair. To be honest I am not overly passionate about the whole MFCR politics and I haven't had any problems with Dan, so that's why".

DITHERING DAN

Dan Carlson has forgotten about Michigan, instead he is wasting time dithering in College Republican National Committee politics. Today at the national board meeting, Dan withdrew his amendment to the constitution. Arriving in Houston, he realized that he did not have the votes to win so he tucked his tail and ran. Is this the kind of leadership that Michigan College Republicans should expect from their chairman?

It's worth asking: will Dan just save Michigan CRs the trouble of a convention and tuck tail and run when he realizes he's lost the race? If only we could be so lucky...

What will the opponents of Stabenow and Granholm say when there is no youth volunteer base to aid in their fight, and how will Dan defend his record of mediocrity? MFCR Deserves Better.

Broken Promises.

Shortly after Dan was elected MFCR Co-Chair in January 2005, he pledged to "strengthen the federation by chartering new clubs" and develop a comprehensive field program that would do just that. In an e-mail to the MFCR Executive Board he ambitiously promises nearly 20 new chapters:

Now, almost a year later, how many newly chartered MFCR chapters can Dan proudly claim are a result of his efforts? Only two, and even one of those is just the college he now attends.

If Michigan College Republicans are going to earn any respect from Republican candidates in 2006, they're going to need leadership that produces results. Michigan simply deserves better than Dan's failed leadership.

Montage!

Dan is really, really excited about dangling his toes in the deep end. Instead of putting the Michigan College Republicans first, he’s decided to waste his time by introducing a doomed constitutional amendment at the upcoming College Republican National Committee board meeting in Houston. He’s so excited, in fact, that he just can’t hide it. In a recent post on his personal blog he squeals with delusional, self-infatuated joy that: "it occurred to me there is only one thing left for me to do before I go to Texas: I need a montage. It'll feature clips of people firing questions at me, me being frustrated, then gradually getting better, till someone finally chips in with, "I think he's ready.""

Perhaps Dan doesn’t remember how the infamous Montage theme from "Team America: World Police" ends:

Always fade out in a montage,
If you fade out, it seems like more time
Has passed in a montage,
Montage

Dan, it seems like a long time to February’s convention, but you’re slowly fading out...

Some Facts

Dan Carlson is not the elected Chairman of the MFCR.
Dan was not elected chair at the 2005 MFCR Convention. Carlson does not respect the constitution of our organization or its members when he claimed that the convention was illegitimate.

Dan is going to law school, making him one of the oldest members in the organization.
Dan is going to law school at Ave Maria and is one of the oldest members of an organization that is nearly 95% undergraduate. His poor performance as chair proves he is too busy and out of touch with the Michigan Federation of College Republicans.

Dan is responsible for Michigan losing 5 votes at the CR National Convention.
Michigan submitted credentials allowing for as many as 8 or 9 votes at the National Convention. Carlson decided that it was more important for him to become chair of the MFCR than for Michigan to enjoy the national prestige that it deserves. Carlson claimed that the convention that was held at his own school per his request was illegitimate, causing Michigan to be knocked down to just 2 votes at the National Convention while simultaneously reducing the power of Michigan on the College Republican National Board.

In 2004, Dan rammed MCRI down everyone's throat even when the party said that it would hurt President Bush's chances for reelection.
Prior to the 2004 Presidential election, Carlson pushed hard for the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative despite the party Chairwoman, Betsy DeVos, making it abundently clear that the initiative would hurt George W. Bush’s reelection odds in Michigan. In 2004, Carlson pushed so hard for the initiative he forced a vote on it at an MFCR Board meeting, putting his own interests before the President or the Party.

Now, in 2005, Dan supports a candidate for US Senate that is opposed to MCRI.
Carlson supports US Senate candidate Keith Butler, who is opposed to the Civil Rights Initiative. Is Carlson really supportive of MCRI or is he supportive of Butler? Does he just want to be on the winning side in hope of future support? Dan isn't a leader, he's an opportunist.

Dan has squandered his time as chair.
Since Dan's takeover of the organization, it has raised no money and hosted zero events..

Dan used the promise of a retreat at Chuck Yob's cabin to bribe people for support, but after he saw that it was no longer necessary he let the retreat fall through.
At an MFCR meeting Carlson used a retreat at Chuck Yob’s cabin to entice people and show that the powers that be were behind him. The retreat was used to calm opposition after a volatile takeover, but as time passed the opposition was overcome and Carlson got lazy. The retreat was the first of many things that would fall through during his administration.

The choice is ours to make, Michigan College Republicans. Has Dan done even a decent job since his forced takeover? How can we consider reelecting him when he's running on such a record of failure? Michigan Deserves Better.
